What oak wilt is

Oak wilt is a fungal disease that blocks the water-conducting tissue of oak trees. Trees in the red oak group (northern red oak, black oak, pin oak and others with pointed leaf lobes) are hit hardest and can die within a few weeks of showing symptoms. White oaks (rounded leaf lobes) are more resistant and usually decline more slowly, over a year or more.

How it spreads

  • Through roots. Oaks of the same group growing near each other often have grafted roots. The fungus moves through those connections, which is why oak wilt tends to show up as a widening patch of dead oaks.
  • By beetles. Small sap beetles carry spores from infected trees to fresh wounds on healthy oaks. That's why pruning or injuring oaks in spring and early summer is risky.
  • On firewood. Wood from infected trees can carry the fungus to new areas. Don't move oak firewood off the property it came from.

Signs to watch for

  • Leaves on a red oak suddenly wilting, turning dull green or bronze from the edges inward, and dropping in early to mid summer.
  • Leaves falling while still partly green.
  • The whole crown going from healthy to bare in a few weeks.
  • Neighboring oaks starting to show the same symptoms a season later.

Other problems (drought stress, two-lined chestnut borer, anthracnose) can look similar. A lab sample is the reliable way to confirm oak wilt. MSU Extension's diagnostic services can test samples, and an arborist can help you collect one.

The no-prune window: mid-April to mid-July

Michigan's DNR and MSU Extension recommend not pruning, cutting or wounding oaks from about April 15 through July 15, when the beetles that carry the fungus are most active. If an oak is damaged in that window by a storm, a mower or construction, cover the wound right away with latex paint or tree wound dressing. Outside that window, oaks can be trimmed normally.

What to do if you have oak wilt

  • Get it confirmed before removing anything.
  • Stop the root spread. The usual approach is to break the root connections between infected and healthy oaks, typically with a deep trench or vibratory plow line, before removing the infected trees. Removing trees first can actually speed the spread through the roots.
  • Handle the wood carefully. Wood from infected trees should stay on site and be covered and sealed with heavy plastic, chipped, or burned where allowed, rather than stacked as open firewood.
  • Protect high-value oaks. Fungicide injections can help protect some nearby oaks, mostly white oaks; ask an arborist whether yours is a candidate.

If you have oaks over the house or drive, schedule trimming for late fall through early spring. Need an oak taken down? We'll plan around the no-cut window when we can, and talk through how the wood will be handled. See tree trimming, tree removal or tree health & risk checks.

Common questions

When should I not prune oak trees in Michigan?

From about April 15 through July 15. Michigan's DNR and MSU Extension recommend avoiding pruning or wounding oaks during that window because beetles that spread oak wilt are most active then.

Can an oak with oak wilt be saved?

Red oaks usually die once they show symptoms. Some white oaks can survive longer, and fungicide treatment can help protect some healthy oaks nearby. The main goal is usually to stop the spread to other trees.

Can I burn or use firewood from an oak that died of oak wilt?

Don't move it off the property. It should be covered and sealed with heavy plastic, chipped, or burned where local rules allow, so it can't spread spores to new trees.

Does oak wilt affect other kinds of trees?

It affects oaks. Other trees in your yard aren't at risk from oak wilt itself.
